About the Summit
Summit 2005 is organized around three themes: Leadership, Community
Membership and Self Determination, and Enhancing the Quality of Supports
and Services. Each theme will be explored in a plenary session designed to inspire
and provide new ways of thinking about the topic. Plenary sessions are followed by
breakout sessions specific to the theme. Each breakout is led by a moderator, who
integrates the perspectives of self advocates and family members, service providers,
researchers, and public policy leaders into the discussion of the topic.
The highlight of the Summit is an interactive Town Hall presentation. Moderated by
Frank Sesno, CNN Special Correspondent, the Town Hall provides attendees with an
opportunity to voice opinions and build consensus around a proactive and forward
thinking community action agenda about building community capacity to support full
participation. Through a sponsorship from NISH, attendees at the Town Hall will use
electronic polling equipment so that perspectives and trends among audience members
can be accurately captured and shared.
Following the Town Hall meeting, State Team Leaders will meet to brainstorm strategies
for implementing the action agenda in their respective states. Leaders of the
Founding organizations will meet for a one-day retreat on September 24 to
create partnership strategies for advancing the action agenda.
About State Teams
The Alliance for Full Participation’s efforts are supported by a national coalition
of State Teams. Each team is comprised of a coalition of self advocates and family
members, service providers, researchers, and policy leaders. These teams have been
meeting to identify challenges and barriers to full participation within their state and to
identify key areas of priority. State Teams will be a critical part of enacting the Summit’s
Action Agenda within their communities. State Teams will share their work in a poster
session in the Exhibit Hall on Friday, September 23, from 11:30 am – 12:45 pm. State
Team members will have the option of meeting from 3:30-5:30 pm to discuss the
outcomes of the Summit prior to returning home.
