Independence is a privilege and a right for which people have been fighting throughout history. For those with developmental disabilities, it is often an ongoing battle. One of the greatest signs that full participation has been achieved is to see people with developmental disabilities taking an active role in a community environment. While it may be perceived as uncommon, the reality is that more and more people with developmental disabilities are successfully living on their own and are even fulfilling the American dream of becoming homeowners. Mike Hilburn is one example. Mike Hilburn, an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, lives in his community and owns his own home. Mike is 47 years old and a native of Springhill, Louisiana.  Mike has not always owned his own home. He lived in a developmental center and a community home for many years. Life for Mike was much different during that time, in that he did not have a lot of privacy, had to follow the daily timetable of a large group, had few social outings, and visited home on a schedule. But luckily, things have changed for Mike. With help from Louisiana’s home and community-based waiver and his strong sense of independence, Mike is now a homeowner and lives and participates in his community where he is well-known and respected. The American Dream has come true for Mike in many ways. He has his own place, a van for transportation, a cock-a-teal named Troy that sits happily on his shoulder, and friends and family to visit and to show hospitality. He competes in bowling and is a dedicated fan of his nephew’s little league team. Mike is also a foot artist and has many of his oil paintings hanging in homes and offices across Louisiana, including the Governor’s Mansion. Mike also finds ways to give back to his community. When he sees someone he thinks needs services or help, he makes sure they know who to talk to and he always follows up to make sure their needs have been met. Mike has achieved this success with the love and support of his family, friends, direct support professionals, and his ability to turn his dreams into reality. Read other success stories |
